Why We Do Not Interpret Tests Requested by Private Providers or Other NHS Services

At Canon Street Medical Centre, we understand that it can be frustrating when your GP is unable to discuss or interpret test results ordered by another service—such as a private clinic or hospital-based NHS team. However, there are important reasons for this policy, which are in place to keep you safe and ensure fair use of NHS resources.

1. Responsibility Lies with the Clinician Who Ordered the Test

Whether your test was requested by a hospital outpatient department or a private provider, the clinician who ordered the test is responsible for reviewing and explaining the results. They are best placed to do so, as they know why the test was requested, understand your clinical background, and can decide what follow-up (if any) is needed.

2. We May Not Have Full Access to Results or Clinical Context

Even if the results are sent to us, we often do not have full access to all necessary details—such as the reason for the test, accompanying notes, or intended follow-up plan. Without this context, it is unsafe for us to interpret results or offer advice based on them.

3. Safe and Fair Use of GP Time

Many specialist tests fall outside the scope of general practice. Interpreting these can be time-consuming and require specialist knowledge. If we offered this service for one patient, we would need to offer it for all, which could significantly impact the care we provide to our registered patients. To keep our services safe and fair, we must focus on the care we are directly responsible for.

What You Should Do

If you are awaiting results from a hospital clinic or private provider:

  • Please contact the clinician or service who requested the test.
  • They are responsible for reviewing your results and advising you on the next steps.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us deliver safe, effective care to all our patients.
